Pullman Hotel Liverpool Review

If you've been following our Instagram and Twitter (@kittyandb) you will have seen that I had a stay at the Pullman Hotel Liverpool with B's godmother.

We struggled to find a hotel that weekend for a decent price and obviously wanted to be central and somewhere nice. I love Liverpool and I've stayed on the Docks each time I've visited and love the proximity to the shops, and all the cultural offerings like the Tate Modern and, of course, The Beatles Story. But, if you're there give your dancing shoes a good outing,  you've got loads of choice at the Docks and you're within staggering distance to the central bars and restaurants (and, oh, did we stagger home!).

Did you know Liverpool Docks is a UNESCO World Heritage site? I actually didn't.

My last trip was when I was pregnant and we went to see Everton, which I, surprisingly, really enjoyed! So, I can't believe I'm saying this, but you should check out a match if you can! Get tickets here.

Booking & Getting the Best Price

I originally went to book via Booking.com, but when I was Googling to see if I could get an even better deal, I saw that Pullman Hotels were part of the Accor Group (Ibis, Pullman, Sofitel, Mercure and more.  And, all of which I've stayed with in various different countries). After a quick search of my email account, I realised that I actually have an Accor hotels loyalty account from a Sofitel stay with them in Essaouira, Morocco. A place I'd highly recommend.

I always sign up to loyalty schemes because I genuinely find I use the offers. I just sign up via a second email account, so my main account isn't inundated. I am the kind of person who likes nice hotels, but I take finding the best deals to the next level and it works - I'm not afraid to negotiate prices, even with big brands! I'll be posting soon on my tips and tricks for doing the same.

So, using an option on the website,  I requested a free call back and was connected immediately, which I thought was pretty nice touch and saved me the call cost from my mobile.  I explained the rate I'd seen and asked if they would be able to beat the price I'd found on Booking.com. The lovely chap I spoke to was really helpful looking at the different options, and that,  combined with my loyalty account resulted in me paying £93.96 for two people. Including breakfast. Not too shabby at all.

I don't expect this price to stay them same once word gets out!

Getting to the Pullman Hotel

This trip was about RnR and a catchup. It's been a hectic few months with sickness and lots of changes in our house, so it was just what the doctor ordered. I got the coach from Leeds and Michele came by train from London. The coach station has moved recently and so the coach and train stations are now really close to each other in the city centre.

The taxi driver wasn't sure about exactly how to get there, as it literally opened the week before, but within a few minutes I was outside the door and ready to check in. I can now say that it's definitely walkable from the coach and train stations which are within walking distance of each other.

Does Liverpool have the friendliest taxi drivers in Britain?

Every visit I've had, we have had nothing but the friendliest and most helpful drivers. In fact, when mine got lost on the way back to the station he charged me less than the fare and despite my insistence, he wouldn't even take more!

According to the Visit Liverpool site, it's 8 miles from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and around 45 minutes from Manchester International airport. For more road directions and travel information, check out the Visit Liverpool site.

The Lobby

On Arrival

The first thing you notice is that there is no check in desk as such, so you are greeted by some very friendly 'welcomers',  the giant globe and a gorgeous and enormous vase of flowers. I love a good lobby and this place gave good lobby.  By that I mean the area is expansive, calming and neutral. It flows through the connectivity centre with touch screen computers and booths, to the bar with the vinoteka, to the restaurant,  chefs table, open kitchen and private seating area (if you want a little more dining privacy).

I checked in online via the email I got a couple of days before and all our requests were accommodated, so we got our room with a dock view above ground level (I hate staying on the ground floor). We were in room 534.

Check in was really efficient and friendly all done using whizzy tablets. Whilst I waited for B's godmother,  I was asked if I wanted to look around and was given a tour of the ground floor, with an explanation of the Dukes restaurant and why the staff were all wearing baker boy caps (it's a nod - excuse the pun - to the docklands heritage!).

The Room

Our bags were taken to our room and I believe we were the very first to stay in it. Which pleased us greatly. If you're looking for quirky or out there decor, this isn't the place for you. The decor is neutral, modern and smart in muted shades. We opted for a twin, which had the most comfy beds, that we pretty much got into straight away whilst we watched Dinner Date and caught up over room service and some Earl Grey (no biscuits, though!). Followed by a glass of wine.

I have video footage of the room that I'll add here soon or upload to our YouTube channel. I'm still having problems getting it uploaded!

The weather was truly, truly miserable, but we had a  great view of the Docks and the Ferris wheel.

There's free high-speed wifi throughout and no limit to the devices you can connect. The TV was also pretty well equipped with lots of options, which apart from Dinner Date and the radio, we didn't actually use.

The C.O. Bigelow toiletries and complimentary slippers

Our room was modern, clean and everything was easy to use. No matter how many hotels I've stayed in, I often have a problem with hotel showers, so many times you feel like you need a manual to use them! This one was easy - literally just a press of the button to switch on and turn the dial to change the temperature. No bath in our room, but it was heavenly to actually have a nice long, hot shower (without an audience - fellow parents know what I mean!)

The toiletries are lavender scented from C.O. Bigelow (apparently, the oldest surviving apothecary in America),  so it was shower and then it was into the bathrobes and complimentary slippers. The only gripe we had in the bathroom was that the shaving mirror was so high that we reckon you'd need to be at least 6ft to actually use it. 6ft we are not!  We really could have done with it for makeup. But, the ring lit mirror was good. In fact,  I really fancied it for filming forYouTube!

Room Service

Comps and Billing

We left my card for comps with £50 pre-approved. We used some of  it for the room service and they were able to split the bill for us. Impressively, before I'd even left,  I'd received an email with the fully itemised VAT receipt, which I thought was great, especially if you're staying for work. Expenses are the absolute bane of my travelling for work life!

Out (out) in Liverpool

The hotel bar was quiet, so we didn't drink there. But, we had a great night out in Liverpool,  which included lots of bars like Circo, which is walkable in a few minutes from The Pullman. It was awful weather and that combined with the cobbles didn't make for the most pleasant of walks in heels. We didn't stay long on Docks and headed into town in a cab which cost a few pounds. I can't remember everywhere we went, but we did go to and we can recommend Alma de Cuba (make sure to book a booth if you want a seat!).

The Pullman Liverpool Breakfast

After a good few hours of drinking and dancing, we staggered back and into our ridiculously comfy beds and woke up in desperate need of the breakfast, which did not disappoint. So many fresh, hearty, healthy,  and naughty choices.  Glazed doughnut? Oh, I don't mind if I do!

Actually, I didn't eat the doughnut, but popped it in my bag as an essential for the journey home! I did have a humongous fruit salad, yoghurt, fruits and seeds,  beans and cheese on toast, tea and gallons of juice. I am always one to get very excited about a fresh juice bar and particularly enjoyed turning juice mixologist with the orange, grapefruit, beetroot, apple and carrot juices.

There was a great selection of hot and cold foods, yoghurts, fruits,  seeds and also a variety of breads (olive, seeded, plain), bagels, croissants. The open kitchen means you can watch the food being prepared and Michele's request of poached eggs was no problem at all. I don't eat meat or eggs, and although I would have liked to see a veggie sausage or similar on the counters, I didn't ask, so I can't be sure if they were available or not.

Either way, we were happily stuffed and shuffling back to the room was a problem - not just because we were still recovering from a night of dancing in heels!

I didn't go to the gym this time. But,  I always book a hotel with a gym. Especially when I'm travelling for work. The gym was not bad at all, clean and with some free weights, cardio machines, fruit, towels, tea, coffee and water, plus,  space for floor workouts and lots of mirrors. An absolute must for checking your form, and of course, getting in that post-gym/workout selfie!

What you need to try

Pullman Hotel Liverpool Review Kitty and B

  • The Vinoteka. I believe it's the only one in Liverpool,  but it is essentially a device for preserving wine after it's been opened. Meaning that you can have any wine by the glass. Not just the house options. There was a good range and the prices were excellent especially for an hotel bar. We did have a glass of house white with room service and it went down very well!
  • The juices. Try mixing the juices at the juice bar. I mixed up beetroot, apple and carrot and it was delicious.

All in all, we had a lovely night at both The Pullman Hotel , and in Liverpool. I'll definitely be back to both.

Our scores

Price: We paid £93.96 for two people, including breakfast. It was actually cheaper than some of the hostels. Although we'd still have been happy if we'd paid more. So, I'd give price we paid more than 5*

✩✩✩✩✩

Room: Functional, clean, modern with iron, great shower, no bath, Shaving/Makeup mirror set too high for us. TV and wifi. Beds incredibly comfy. No biscuits! Good for the price point.

✩✩✩✩

Facilities: Gym, restaurant, conferencing, connectivity lounge, with computers. The bar isn't a hotel bar we'd travel to go to, but it's a nice, relaxed, well-stocked bar.

✩✩✩✩✩

Food: Room service was good. Although, more chips please! We didn't eat in the restaurant

✩✩✩✩

Breakfast: The breakfast was fantastic. As a pescatarian, there was a really good range. B's godmother got her much-loved and requested poached eggs.

✩✩✩✩✩

Hospitality: The welcome and service could not have been friendlier,  without being overbearing.

✩✩✩✩✩

Staff: Even as a new opening, the staff has obviously been recruited and trained well. They were well presented professional, approachable, friendly and knowledgeable

✩✩✩✩✩

Location: Fantastic Dockside location, close to everything you need. Walkable from the stations. Close to bars, restaurants, shops.

✩✩✩✩✩

Cleanliness: As a new 4* hotel, you really wouldn't expect cleanliness to be a problem, and it wasn't,  our room was pretty pristine

✩✩✩✩✩

Great for: Business, Leisure, Couples

Overall: Would definitely recommend. The staff, price, breakfast, and location take it to 5/5 for us
